Food introduction update!

I'm starting to get a little more adventurous in terms of food introduction, and it is so much fun. For weeks, I only gave my baby girl beef and chicken in mesh feeders because a) I am grossed out by the idea of puréed meat and b) I didn't feel comfortable giving her chunks of food, no matter how small. The mesh feeder just seemed like the safer option for us. Now that she's older (8 months already!) and we're more experienced with solid foods, I feel ready to take food introduction to the next level. So, for the past several days I've been giving her tiny little pieces of food sans mesh feeder. Sometimes we mix it in with the purée; other times we hand feed it to her piece-by-piece. I'm thinking it won't be long before we ditch the purées altogether.

Food she's tried so far: Sweet potatoes, yams, carrots, squash, avocado, peas, turkey, ground beef, steak, chicken, cucumbers, blueberries, apples, green beans, cauliflower, egg yolk, cherries, pears, blueberries and spinach.

Favorites: She's a good little eater and hasn't rejected anything (with the exception of water, which she hated at first), but she seems to like ground beef, cucumbers and sweet potatoes best!

Food she likes that doesn't seem to agree with her: Egg yolk. Bummer.

Food I probably won't introduce for a while: Most nightshades (I say 'most' because technically cherries are a nightshade). I don't have any real rationale for this ... I just sense that we need to hold off on things like peppers, tomatoes and eggplant.

Plan for the next couple of weeks: Little by little, more variety.

  1. Hi - I just stumbled across your blog because I'm trying to figure out how to make paleo/primal work for my 4 month old as we move into solids soon. Hope you don't mind a quick suggestion. It would be awesome if you could go back and tag your posts with the age of your child so folks like me could quickly pull up the 4 and 5 month posts to follow along "age-appropriately". Just a thought.

    Thanks for writing all this!

    1. Hi Pete! Thanks ... that is a great idea. I will start tagging with her age from now on and at some point in the future I'll try to tag old posts (might take me a while to get to it, though).

  2. Hi! I, too, just stumbled across your blog. I'm interested in Paleo, and I have a 7-month-old.

I've done some serious Googling over the last week to find everything out there on egg yolks and liver. What I found was that most moms seemed to complain that egg yolks didn't sit well with their babies - most vomited. Moms would reintroduce each month, and I saw a pattern: the babies seemed to stop vomiting around 9 months! I decided to wait until 9 months.

Last night I cooked 1.5 pounds of chicken livers and am trying to find any resource that identifies how much babies should eat weekly. Do you know? Here: http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/Iron.htm I found at least the amount of iron per weight, but that didn't answer my question.

    Excited to start following you!
